Taekwondo White Belt With Gold Stripe Techniques

Knowledge of the following stances, hand techniques, and foot techniques are required for a white belt with a gold stripe in Taekwondo. The following written instructions explain how to perform the various moves.

Stances:

One-Legged Stance:  One foot is on the floor with the knee bent slightly and the toes pointed straight ahead. The other foot is off the ground with the thigh and sole parallel to the floor. The knee is pointed straight ahead with the toes pointed back. The arms are away from the body at a 45-degree angle and the fists are palm side down. The foot on the floor determines the stance.

Bending Ready Stance:  One foot is on the floor with the knee bent slightly and the toes pointed 135 degrees from the front foot. The other foot is off the ground with the inner thigh parallel to the floor and the sole perpendicular to the floor pointing forward with the knee pointing to the rear. The hands are in guard. The foot on the floor determines the stance.

Rear-Foot Stance:  The toes of the front foot are on the floor pointed straight ahead. The heel of the front foot is off the ground with the front knee bent. The rear foot is perpendicular to the front foot with the rear ankle in line with the front foot. The feet are close together but not touching. The rear foot determines the stance.

Fighting Stance:  The feet are parallel to each other approximately shoulder width apart and perpendicular to the opponent with the knees slightly bent. The side out is facing the oponent with the head turned towards the opponent. The hands are in guard with the upper arms relaxed and against the sides protecting the ribs. The chin is tucked close to the chest so that the top of the fists are just below eye height. The fists should be approximately shoulder width apart with the palm sides towards the face but not touching it. The side out determines the stance.

Hand Techniques:

Reverse Punch:  To execute a reverse punch to the north with the left arm, begin in a right side out fighting stance to the north with the hands in guard. Move your right foot to the northeast at the same time you extend your left arm to the north. When you are one fist's distance away from your target you will start to rotate your left wrist from its current vertical position to a horizontal position while pivoting your left foot to the north. At the same time that the left fist contacts the target the right foot should land in a right walking stance to the north. Both feet should be pointed to the north and the left fist should be horizontal with the palm facing the floor. A reverse punch is delivered with the opposite hand of the foot that is forward. A straight punch is delivered with same hand as the foot that is forward.

Single Knife Hand Block:  To execute a left arm single knife hand block in a right L-stance to the north, begin in a parallel stance to the east with the left knife hand a couple of inches away from the right ear with the palm facing the ear. The back of the right fist should be touching the back of the left hand. Start moving the left foot to the north and away from your body while at the same time moving your left arm to the north and your right fist towards your right hip rotating both of your wrists. When the left foot lands in a right L-stance to the north your left knife hand should be above the left thigh and at shoulder height with the left elbow bent at 90 degrees to deliver the block. The right fist will be palm side up beside the right hip.

Double Forearm Block:  To execute a double forearm block in a right walking stance to the north, begin in a parallel stance to the west with the knuckles of both fists touching and a couple of inches away from your left ear with the palms facing away from the ear. Start moving the right foot to the northeast and away from your body while at the same time moving both hands to the north and pivoting on the left foot. Just before your right foot lands begin to rotate both wrists. When the right foot lands you should be in a right walking stance to the north with your right arm above the right leg. The right elbow should be bent 90 degrees with the right fist at shoulder height with the palm facing the shoulder. The left fist should be palm side up and close to but not touching the inside of the right elbow.

Twin Forearm Block:  To execute a twin forearm block in a right L-stance to the north, begin in a parallel stance to the east with both fists slightly behind the right hip. The fists should be close together but not touching with the palms facing to the rear. Start moving the left foot to the north and away from your body while at the same time moving both arms to the north. When the left foot lands in a right L-stance to the north your left fist with the palm facing away from you should be above the left thigh and at shoulder height with the left elbow bent at 90 degrees to deliver the block. The right fist should be a couple of inches above and in front of your head with the palm facing away from you with the thumb side down to deliver the block. Both forearms will be used to deliver the blocks.

Single Knife Hand Strike:  To execute a left arm single knife hand block in a right L-stance to the north, begin in a parallel stance to the east with the left knife hand a couple of inches away from the right ear with the palm facing the ear. The back of the right fist should be touching the back of the left hand. Start moving the left foot to the north and away from your body while at the same time moving your left arm to the north and your right fist towards your right hip rotating both of your wrists. When the left foot lands in a right L-stance to the north your left arm should be almost fully extended with just a slight bend at the elbow and above the left thigh with the knife hand palm side down to deliver the strike. The right fist will be palm side up beside the right hip.

Guarding Block:  To execute a guarding block in a right L-stance to the north, begin in a parallel stance to the east with the left fist a couple of inches away from the right ear with the palm facing the ear. The right arm will be fully extended to the south and angled up so that the right fist is above head height with the palm facing down. Start moving the left foot to the north and away from your body while at the same time rotating your wrists and moving your arms to the north. When the left foot lands in a right L-stance to the north your left fist should be above the left thigh with the palm facing away from you and at shoulder height with the left elbow bent at 90 degrees to deliver the block. In addition the right fist should be in front of but not touching your solar plexus with the palm side up.

Foot Techniques:

Turning Kick:  To execute a turning kick with the rear leg from a right walking stance to the north do the following six steps in rapid succession. First, lift the left leg so that the thigh and sole are parallel to the floor. Second, turn the left hip over while pivoting on the right foot to the southeast so that the left inner thigh is parallel to the floor. The left knee will be pointed to the east and the left heel will be pointed to the west. Third, extend the left foot by straightening the knee with the toes angled back thus kicking towards the east contacting the target with the ball of your foot. Fourth, retract the left foot by bending your knee so that the knee points east and the heel is pointed south. Fifth, turn the left hip up while pivoting on the right foot to the north so that the thigh and sole are parallel to the floor. Sixth, set your left foot back down into a right walking stance to the north.

Roundhouse Kick:  To execute a roundhouse kick with the rear leg from a right walking stance to the north lift the left leg to the north to the height of the target keeping the leg straight with the knee just slightly bent. The left heel should be pointed towards the floor. Once the height of the target has been reached turn the left hip over while pivoting on the right foot to the southeast so that the left inner thigh is facing the floor. Keeping the leg straight with the knee just slightly bent move the left foot to the east with the toes angled back thus contacting the target with the ball of your foot. Retract the left leg and turn the left hip up while pivoting on the right foot to the north. Set your left foot back down into a right walking stance to the north.

Boot-to-Boot Sweep Kicks:  To execute a boot-to-boot sweep kick from a right L-stance to the north, begin by moving the left foot away from your body to the northwest. Once the left foot is beside the opponent's ankle, move the left foot to the east taking out their leg. Retract the left foot to the southwest setting it down in a right L-stance to the north.
